Arulagam Secretary Bharathidasan S receives Community Conservation Leadership Award from the Tamil Nadu Government 

The Government of Tamil Nadu - Department of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, honored 100 individuals with the ‘Community Conservation Leadership Award’ for their exceptional contributions to nature and wildlife conservation, renewable energy, waste management, and pollution control. The award ceremony was held on February 28, 2026, at Sethumadai, within the Anamalai Tiger Reserve.

The Honorable Minister for Forests and Khadi, Mr. R.S. Rajakannappan presided over the function and presented the awards.

Mr. Rakesh Kumar Dogra (IFS), Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden, stated that I was selected for this award in recognition of the vulture conservation efforts led by the organization ‘Arulagam.’ I consider this a collective recognition of the hard work and dedication of my team members—Ms. R. Sundari, Ms. Revathi, Mr. Paraman, and Mr. Santhosh Krishnan. This award serves as a significant motivation for us to continue our conservation journey.

Dignitaries in attendance: The event was graced by Mrs. Supriya Sahu (IAS), Additional Chief Secretary, Environment, Climate Change and Forest Department. Other distinguished attendees included Mr. Srinivas R. Reddy (IFS), PCCF & Head of Forest Force; Mr. Rakesh Kumar Dogra (IFS), PCCF & Chief Wildlife Warden; Mr. Anurag Mishra (IFS), Special Secretary, Environment and Climate Change; Mr. D. Venkatesh (IFS) (Field Director, ATR); Mr. Devendra Kumar Meena (Deputy Director, ATR); Mr. Jayaraj (IFS) (Forest Officer, Hosur); Mr. Venkatesh Prabhu (IFS) (Forest Officer, Coimbatore); Mr. Vismiju Viswanathan (IFS) (Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Eco-Tourism Board), and other senior officials.

A Personal Dedication: My father, who encouraged every step of my journey, would have been incredibly proud to share this achievement with everyone had he been with us today. I dedicate this award to him.

 

Fellow Conservationists: I am also pleased that several of my peers were recognized for their tireless service, including ‘Maram’ Mr. Yoganathan, Mr. Kalidasan (Osai, Coimbatore), Mr. Syed (Green Care), Mr. Sirajudeen (WNCT), Mr. Pavendhan (Ornithologist & Butterfly Researcher), Mr. K. Srinivasan (Nature Conservation Organization), Dr. A. Samson (Vulture Researcher), Joseph Reginald (CUBE), Mr. K. Sakthivel (Sathyamangalam Environment & Wildlife Association), Mr. Bravin (Hedgehog Conservationist), and Kuyili (Bird Conservationist) and Mr. Ganeswar and Ms. Angeline Mano of Salem Ornithological Society.

Such awards act as a powerful catalyst to protect our planet for future generations. We hope this initiative continues to expand annually, reaching many more committed individuals. We sincerely commend the Tamil Nadu Forest Department for this commendable effort.

மக்கள் பங்கேற்பு- இயற்கைப் பாதுகாப்புத் தலைமைத்துவ விருது 

இயற்கை & காட்டுயிர்கள் பாதுகாப்பு, மாற்று எரிசக்தி, குப்பை மேலாண்மை மற்றும் மாசு தடுப்பு உள்ளிட் பணிகளில் சிறந்து விளங்கும் நூறு நபர்களைத் தேர்வு செய்து, தமிழ்நாடு அரசு இயற்கைப் பாதுகாப்புத் தலைமைத்துவ விருது’ வழங்கிச் சிறப்பித்தது. இதற்கான விழா, கடந்த 28-02-2026 அன்று பொள்ளாச்சி, ஆனைமலை புலிகள் காப்பகத்திற்கு உட்பட்ட சேத்துமடையில் நடைபெற்றது.

மாண்புமிகு திரு. ஆர்.எஸ். ராஜகண்ணப்பன், அவர்கள், வனம் மற்றும் கதர்த் துறை அமைச்சர், விழாவுக்குத் தலைமையேற்று விருதுகளை வழங்கிச் சிறப்பித்தார். 

'அருளகம்' அமைப்புப் பாறு கழுகுகள் பாதுகாப்புப் பணியில் ஆற்றிவரும் சேவையைப் பாராட்டி இவ்விருது எனக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டதாக  திரு. ராகேஷ் குமார் டோக்ராIFS, முதன்மை தலைமை வனப்பாதுகாவலர் மற்றும் தலைமை காட்டுயிர்ப் பாதுகாவலர் தெரிவித்தார்.

 எமது குழுவைச் சேர்ந்த செல்வி சுந்தரி, செல்வி ரேவதி, திரு. பரமன் மற்றும் திரு. சந்தோசு கிருட்டிணன் ஆகியோரின் உழைப்பிற்கும், பங்களிப்பிற்கும் கிடைத்த கூட்டு அங்கீகாரமாகவே இதை நான் கருதுகிறேன். எங்களைத் தொடர்ந்து ஊக்குவிக்க இவ்விருது பெரும் உந்துதலாக அமையும்.

இப்பூவுலகை வருங்காலத் தலைமுறைக்குப் பாதுகாப்பாக விட்டுச்செல்ல இதுபோன்ற விருதுகள் உந்துசக்தியாக அமையும். ஆண்டுதோறும் இன்னும் பல நபர்களுக்கு இவ்விருது சென்று சேரவேண்டும். இதனை முன்னெடுத்த தமிழ்நாடு அரசின் வனத்துறையை மனதாரப் பாராட்டுகிறோம். 

இயற்கைப் பாதுகாப்பிலும் வெல்வோம் ஓன்றாக.

 

 

On 25 January 2026, the Restoration through Native Plant Nursery Practices event was carried  out at the Poonthalir Native Plant Nursery located within the KCT Campus. with the  participation of 31 volunteers from State Street, 5 students from Sankara College, and the  Arulagam team.  

This activity marked a meaningful New Year resolution for Poonthalir Nursery to strengthen  native plant restoration efforts continuing the work we have done before, but starting this year  with renewed commitment and collective action. During the event, volunteers together filled  2,420 soil bags, mixing manure and soil with their hands and experiencing the texture and smell  of the earth. While filling the bags many paused in the feel of soil, smell the earth, and reconnect  with nature. After the bag-filling activity, all volunteers eagerly inserted Saraca asoca seeds(சீதா) and Terminalia elliptica seeds(கருமருது) into the soil bags, while our team  explained the complete journey from soil to seed. Many participants shared a heart-touching  connection with the plants and expressed excitement as they waited for the seeds to germinate. 

The event was further by the presence of our Chief Guest, Mr. C. L. S. Annadurai, Director, Tribal  Directorate and Additional Director, Tribal Research Centre, He spoke about the various  initiatives taken by the government for tribal communities and how sustained efforts in  education, their livelihood support, and welfare schemes are improving tribal lifestyles. He appreciated Arulagam’s work in tribal education, their livelihood upliftment,  environmental conservation, and its continued efforts to act as a voice for the voiceless,  especially through wildlife and vulture, sand-dunes conservation and native species protection  for future generations. He shared that Arulagam was chosen for its uniqueness and consistency  in working at the grassroots level, and highlighted the leadership of Mr. Bharathidasan,  Secretary of Arulagam, has ensured that support reaches where voices are often unheard. He  acknowledged that this clarity of purpose has helped Arulagam grow steadily along with its  committed team. 

He also expressed happiness and respect for the volunteers, noting that they chose to spend their  free time serving nature rather than resting, and said it was encouraging to see such dedication.  Concluding his address, he shared his hope that Arulagam would continue to expand its work for  nature and tribal communities and remain committed to its principle of being a voice for the  voiceless. 

The Arulagam and Poonthalir teams will continue to nurture the saplings, transplant them in  suitable locations, and ensure their long-term care. The activity became more than physical  work; it turned into a moment of learning, reflection, and quiet responsibility. Conversations  flowed easily as volunteers learned from one another and from the nursery team, reinforcing the  idea that restoration is built through small, mindful-actions.

The event set a positive tone for the year ahead showing how small, mindful actions, when done  together, can grow into lasting impact for native biodiversity and the ecosystems that depend on it. This shared effort reflects a strong beginning for the year rooted in teamwork, responsibility,  and a genuine commitment to restoring native plants and ecosystems. 

 

We are grateful to KCT College for providing the space that made the execution of the event  possible. A big thank you to all the volunteers for their time, and enthusiasm, and our sincere  appreciation to the Arulagam team Mr. Bharathidasan, Mr. John, Ms. Nilitha, and Mr. Anbu,  the Poonthalir Nursery team Ms. Kavitha, Ms.Palaniyammal, Ms.Palanaal Palani, Mr.Palani  Velan, Ms.Rajamani, and Mr.Kamaraj, and the KCT team—Mr. Paramaguru and Mr. Nethaji,  for their constant support and guidance throughout the event. 

At the end of the day, Arulagam shared thoughtful giveaways with the volunteers—honey  procured from a tribal village, steel water bottles to encourage the reduction of plastic  use, and cloth bags carrying the message “நமது சிறுசெயலும் சூழலையும் பாதுகாக்கும்” (Even our small actions protect the environment). The KCT team shared  fresh bottle gourds grown on their own campus farmland, cultivated without chemical  pesticides, offering to the volunteers a direct experience of healthy, chemical-free food and  reinforcing the values of sustainable.More than gifts, these simple gestures left a lasting  impression, reminding everyone that small, conscious actions can create real change.

Every year, February 2 is observed to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands and the challenges they face.

This year, the Arulagam organisation observed Arul’s Memorial Birthday in conjunction with World Wetlands Day. 

The day was commemorated by planting trees along with students from a primary school near Kinathukadavu, cleaning the school premises, and arranging safe drinking water facilities for the students.

World Wetlands 2026 - This year’s theme is "Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage." The  global campaign spotlights the timeless role of traditional knowledge in sustaining wetland ecosystems and preserving cultural identity. 

தமிழ்நாட்டிலுள்ள பறவை ஆர்வளர்களுக்கான ஆண்டுக் கூடுகைத் திருவிழா இந்த ஆண்டு ஜனவரி மாதம் 4 ஆம் நாள் திருச்செங்கோடு- கே.எஸ்.ஆர். கல்வி வளாகத்தில் சிறப்பாக நடந்தேறியது.

சென்ற ஆண்டு புதுக்கோட்டைக்கு வழிதவறி வந்த பாறு பறவையின் பின்னால் சுற்றித்திரிந்ததால் அப்போது நடந்த நிகழ்வில் கலந்து கொள்ள இயலவில்லை. இந்த ஆண்டு கட்டாயம் கலந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று ஜெகநாதன் அவர்கள் அன்புக்கட்டளை இட்டிருந்தார். அதனடிப்படையிலும், பறவையியலில் புதிய இளந்தலைமுறை ஆர்வமுடன் ஈடுபட்டுவருவதைக் கண்டு தெரிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும் என்ற ஆர்வத்தின் அடிப்படையிலும் திருவாளர்கள் சாந்தாராம், சுதாகர், பத்ரிநாராயணன் உள்ளிட்டோரைச் சந்திக்கும் முகமாகவும் இந்த ஆண்டு நடைபெறும் கூட்டத்தில் கலந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று முன்னமே திட்டமிட்டிருந்தேன். பாறு தொடர்பான கண்காட்சி நடத்தவும் எண்ணியிருந்தோம்.

அதற்கேற்ப பயணத்திட்டத்தையும் வடிவமைத்திருந்தேன்.
4ஆம் தேதி அதிகாலை 5 மணிக்கெல்லாம் எழுந்து வீட்டிலிருந்து கிளம்பினேன். வீட்டுப்படியில் கால்வைக்கும்போது நீர்க்குமிழி கொப்பளிப்பது போல ஓலி மரத்திலிருந்து கேட்டது.  வழியனுப்ப வந்த துணைவியார் இது எதனுடைய குரல் என்று கேட்டார். அக்குரல் நான் முன்னமே கேட்டகுரல்.  மேலும் இக்குரல் குறித்து பறவையியலாளர் ஜெகநாதன் அவர்களிடம் கேட்டுத்தெளிவு பெற்றிருந்தேன். அதனால் என் துணைவியார் கேட்டவுடன் அது  scops owl — கவைமுக ஆந்தை எனப்பதிலளித்து விட்டு விடைபெற்றுவிட்டு எனது கூட்டுக்காரர்களுடன் பயணத்தைத் தொடங்கினேன். என்னுடன் சகப்பணியாளர்கள் செல்வி சுந்தரி, ரேவதி, ஜான் ஆகியோரும் வந்திருந்தனர்.
ஈரோடில் பறவை ஆர்வலரும் கவிஞருமான செல்வமணி அக்கா எங்களோடு இணைந்து கொண்டார்.

பறவைகளைப் பார்ப்பது போன்ற சந்தோசம் பறவையியலாளர்களைப் பார்க்கும்போதும் ஏற்படுகிறது. இறங்கியவுடன் டாக்டர் பத்ரிநாராயணன் அவர்களையும் திரு. குமரன் சதாசிவம் அவர்களையும் கண்டு உரையாடும் நல் வாயப்புக்கிடைத்தது.

சென்னை இயற்கைக் கழகத்தைச் சேர்ந்த சுதாகர் அவர்களுக்கும் ஜெகநாதன் அவர்களுடைய தகப்பனார் திரு பஞ்சாபகேசன் அவர்களுக்கும் எனது வணக்கத்தை தெரிவித்தேன். பறவை நோக்கலை மாணவர்களிடம் கொண்டு சேர்க்கும் ஆசிரியப் பெருமக்கள் சிலரும் வந்திருந்தனர். அவர்களுடனும் உரையாடி மகிழ்ந்தேன்.

கள்ளத்தனமான பறவை வணிகம் தொடர்பாக ஏ.மதிவாணன் அவர்கள் ஆற்றிய உரையையும் ATREE நிறுவனத்தைச் சேர்ந்த மதிவாணன் தாமிரபரணி பறவைகள் கணக்கெடுப்பு குறித்து ஆற்றிய உரையையும் வனத்துறையிலிருந்து முனைவர் சதீஸ் நிர்மல் அவர்கள் ஆற்றிய உரையையும் ஆர்வமுடன் செவி மடுத்தேன்.

 
பறவைகளுக்கும் மரங்களுக்குமான தொடர்பு குறித்து டாக்டர் பத்ரிநாராயணன் அவர்கள் ஆற்றிய உரையும் அறம் சார்ந்த பறவை நோக்கல் குறித்து திரு சாந்தாராம் அவர்கள் ஆற்றிய உரையும் குறிப்பிடும்படியாக இருந்தது.

பறவைகளை எப்படி இனங்கான்பது என்பது குறித்து அரவிந்த் அமிர்தராசு, அனிதா, சுரேந்தர் பூபாலன், ஆனந்த் சிபு, உரையாடினர். பறவைகள் பார்த்தல் மற்றும் பாதுகாப்பு குறித்து மாணவர்களிடம் எப்படிக்கொண்டு போக வேண்டும் என்று செல்வகணேசு, ஏஞ்சலின் மனோ, மரிய அந்தோனி, சாகித்ய செல்வராசு ஆகியோர் உரை நிகழ்த்தினர்.

பறவைகளுக்கு வளையமிடல் குறித்து பம்பாய் இயற்கைக் கழகத்தைச் சேர்ந்த சிவக்குமாரின் உரை அமைந்திருந்தது.

எப்போதும் போல இளந்தலைமுறையைச் சேர்ந்த பறவை நோக்கர்கள் தங்களது பங்களிப்பைச் சிறந்த முறையில் நல்கினர். எனக்கும் உற்சாகம் தொற்றிக்கொண்டது.

பாறு கழுகுகள் பாதுகாப்பு குறித்து எனது சிற்றுரை அமைந்திருந்தது. அருளகம் சார்பாக மேற்கொண்டு வரும் பணிகளைப் பறவையாளர்களுடன் பகிர்ந்துகொண்டேன். இவ்வினத்தைக் காப்பது அனைவரது கூட்டுமுயற்சியால் மட்டுமே முடியும் என்பதை வலியுறுத்தும் முகமாக பாறு கழுகுகளின் கோட்டோவியத்தை திருவண்ணாமலையைச் சேர்ந்த ஓவியரும் பறவை ஆர்வலருமான சிவகுமார் அங்கேயே வரைந்து தந்தார். அந்த பாறு கழுகின் ஓவியத்தில்  அதில் கலந்துகொண்ட பறவையாளர்கள் அனைவரது கைரேகையையும் பதியச் சொன்னோம். அனைவரது கைரேகை பதித்த பாறு கழுகு ஓவியமாக மிளிர்ந்தது. பார்ப்போரைப் பரவசப்படுத்தியது.

இந்த வண்ண ஓவியத்தை திரு சாந்தாராம் அவர்களும் திரு பஞ்சாபகேசன் அவர்களும் தொடங்கிவைத்தனர். மாணவர்களும் சிறுவர்களும் உற்சாகமாகத் தங்கள் கைரேகையப் பதித்தனர். இந்திகழ்வை சுரேந்தரும், செல்வகனேசும் ஒருங்கிணைத்தார்.

Whenever the Western Ghats face disaster, his name inevitably echoes through the mountains. There is always a lingering sense of regret that he warned us long ago, and we failed to listen.

This was the period when the Western Ghats report, prepared by Madhav Gadgil, ignited a fierce debate among policymakers and nature lovers. The report clearly detailed what needed to be done - and what must be avoided - to protect the Western Ghats for generations to come. While the report was largely welcomed, it also provoked significant opposition.It was during this time, in 2014, that an invitation came from the Keystone Foundation. Mr. Pratim Roy and Mrs. Sarala contacted me to ask whether I could translate a lecture delivered by Madhav Gadgil as part of the Nehru Memorial Lecture series into Tamil. Driven by keen interest, I agreed.I began the translation but made very little progress.

Since the deadline was only two weeks away, I asked a few friends for help, but they were unable to take it on. While I was in Erode to deliver a talk on vultures around that time, I met the late Dr. V. Jeevanandam, leader of the Tamil Nadu Green Movement. I mentioned the translation work to him, and he immediately asked me to send him the article.

Within just three days of receiving it, he translated the entire piece and sent it back, asking only where it should be forwarded. I then refined the text slightly and published it as a book titled ‘ஒரு மலையும் சில அரசியலும்’ (A Mountain and Some Politics).

The book release was organised by Mr. Kumar of PUCL. Madhav Gadgil participated in the event as a special guest. Scholars Dr. Ranjit Daniels and Dr. Jayashree Vencatesan, who had assisted Mr. Gadgil in preparing the Western Ghats Report, also attended and provided detailed insights.

It is important to note that Madhav Gadgil always raised his voice on behalf of marginalized people, especially voiceless indigenous communities. Reading his interviews can sometimes be unsettling; nevertheless, his contribution to the development of a new scientific perspective and approach is immeasurable.

By challenging and overturning the notion of nature conservation without public participation, he adopted a rational, people-centered approach - focused on the downtrodden similar to that of Periyar E.V. Ramasamy.We remember him with deep respect.

இவர் அப்போதே சொன்னாரே நாம் கேட்காமல் விட்டு விட்டோமே என்ற புலம்பல் இருந்து கொண்டே இருக்கும்.

மேற்குத் தொடர்ச்சி மலையைக் காலங்காலமாகப் பாதுகாக்க என்னவெல்லாம் செய்ய வேண்டும் எதைத் தவிர்க்க வேண்டும் என்ற அடிப்படையில் மாதவ் காட்கில் தயாரித்து அளித்த அறிக்கை பரபரப்பாகப் பேசப்பட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்த காலகட்டம் அது. வரவேற்கத்தக்க அவ்வறிக்கைக்கு பல்வேறு எதிர்வினைகள் ஆற்றப்பட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்த காலகட்டத்தில் 2014-இல் கீஸ்டோன் அமைப்பிடமிருந்து ஒரு அழைப்பு வந்தது. திருவாளர் பிரதிம்ராயும் திருமதி சரளாவும் பேசினர். மாதவ் காட்கில் அவர்கள் நேரு நினைவுச் சொற்பொழிவிற்காக ஆற்றிய உரை ஒன்றைத் தமிழில் மொழிபெயர்த்துத் தர இயலுமா என்று கேட்டனர். ஆர்வம் மிகுதியால் ஒத்துக்கொண்டேன்.

மொழிபெயர்க்க ஆரம்பித்தேன். மொழிபெயர்க்கும் பணி மிக மெதுவாகச் சென்றது. இரண்டு வாரத்திற்குள் தரவேண்டும் என்ற இலக்கு இருந்ததால் வேறு சில நண்பர்களைத் தொடர்புகொண்டேன். அவர்களும் இயலாமையைத் தெரிவித்தனர்.

 அவ்வமயம் பாறு கழுகுகள் குறித்து உரையாற்றுவதற்காக ஈரோடு சென்றிருந்தபோது தமிழ்நாடு பசுமை இயக்கத் தலைவர் மருத்துவர் காலஞ்சென்ற ஜீவானந்தம் அவர்களைத் சந்தித்து இம் மொழிபெயர்ப்பு குறித்துத் தெரிவித்தேன். உடனே கட்டுரையை அனுப்புமாரு கோரினார். 

அனுப்பி வைத்த மூன்று நாட்களிலேயே முழுவதையும் மொழிபெயர்த்துவிட்டு எந்த முகவரிக்கு அனுப்பவேண்டும் என்று கூறி அனுப்பியும் வைத்தார். அதை நான் சற்றே மெருகேற்றி, ‘ஒரு மலையும் சில அரசியல்களும்’ என்ற தலைப்பில் நூலாக்கினேன். 

இந்நூல் வெளியீட்டு விழாவை பியுசிஎல் அமைப்பைச் சேர்ந்த திரு குமார் என்பவர்  நடத்தினார். அவ்விழாவில் பேராசிரியர் மாதவ் காட்கில் சிறப்பு அழைப்பாளராகக் கலந்துகொண்டார். மேற்குத்தொடர்ச்சி மலை அறிக்கை தயாரிக்க மாதவ் காட்கிலுக்கு உதவிய அறிஞர்கள் இரஞ்சித் டேனியல்ஸ் அவர்களும் திருமதி ஜெயஸ்ரீ அவர்களும் கலந்துகொண்டு விளக்கமளித்தனர். 

மாதவ் காட்கில் அவர்களது குரல் எப்பொழுதும் அடிமட்டத்திலுள்ள மக்களுக்காகவும் குரலற்ற பழங்குடி மக்களுக்காகவும் இருந்தது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. சில வேளைகளில் அவரது நேர்காணலைப் படிக்கும்போது நெருடலாக இருக்கும். ஆனாலும் புதிய பார்வையினையும் அனுகுமுறையையும் அறிவியலாளர்கள் மட்டத்தில் உருவாக்கியதில் அவரது பங்கு அளப்பரியது.

மக்கள் பங்கேற்பு இல்லாத இயற்கைப் பாதுகாப்பு என்ற சிந்தனையைப் புரட்டிப்போட்ட தில் அவர் பெரியார் பாணியினைக் கடைபிடித்தார். அவரை நினைவு கூர்கிறோம். அவருக்குப் புகழஞ்சலியை தெரிவித்துக்கொள்கிறோம்.

On January 9, at Rameswaram, a Science Demonstration Exhibition by the students of Annai Scholastica Arts and Science College was conducted under the leadership of the Mother Superior Mother Amutha Theos Mother General of the Sacred Heart of Jesus congregation. Vellore, in the presence of the College Principal Dr. Sr. S. Anne Perpet Sophy and Secretary Ms. Ruby. 

Mr. Muralidharan Rameswaram Tahsildar  participated as the Chief Guest. The exhibition witnessed the participation of more than 750 school students. Scientific demonstration models prepared by students from all departments of the college were displayed during the exhibition.

As a special highlight of the event, an awareness and demonstration stall was set up by Arulagam Nature Conservation Organization as part of the Rameswaram Sand Dunes Conservation Project, which has been implemented over the past two years on Rameswaram Island with support from SGP/GEF/TERI/UNDP. The stall featured training-of-trainers activities, demonstrations of native trees, shrubs, and creepers suitable for sandy soil, and awareness messages on the importance of conserving spiders and the protection of vultures. School and college students, teachers, and members of the public who visited the exhibition gained insights into various aspects of environmental conservation, particularly the features, uses, and ecological importance of sand dunes.

 

The arrangements for this exhibition were jointly carried out by the Rameswaram Sand Dunes Conservation Project of Arulagam Nature Conservation Organization under the guidance of Secretary Mr. S. Bharathidasan, with support from Treasurer Amirthalingam, Joint Secretary Joseph, and Botanical Researcher Anbu. The program was coordinated with the involvement of Project Associate Researcher Mohammad Shahidh, Project Consultant Natarajan, and staff members of the Neithal Nursery—Murugarani, Jayalakshmi, Rajeshwari, Seetha, Maheswari, and Nagasakthi.

 

When Youth, Sport, and Conservation Unite : A Vulture Awareness Initiative in the Nilgiris - Volleyball Tournament on January 1st 2026

Arulagam is a nature conservation organisation with over 23 years of experience in safeguarding ecosystems and working closely with communities across Vulture Safe Zones in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. The organisation has been deeply involved in vulture conservation, addressing the rapid decline of vulture populations through field research, awareness programmes, and strong community partnerships. 

On 1st January 2026, the Allimoyar youth of the Nilgiris organised a Volleyball Tournament, bringing together 18 teams from tribal villages across the Nilgiris and Erode districts. Recognising this gathering as a valuable outreach opportunity, Arulagam leveraged the event to spread awareness about vulture conservation among the local communities.

For the past three years, Arulagam has been supporting this event by sponsoring the third prize cash award of ₹5,000, recognising the tournament as an important platform for community engagement. In 2026, the tournament saw the participation of 18 teams from the Nilgiris and Erode districts, with a gathering of youngsters and community members. Recognising the strength of this collective presence, Arulagam decided to integrate a vulture conservation awareness programme into the event, transforming a sports gathering into a meaningful space for learning, and shared responsibility.

The event was coordinated by Mr. Paraman, Field Coordinator, Arulagam, who worked closely with the local community members and encouraging active participation throughout the programme. The presence of State Street volunteers added further strength to the initiative, creating an opportunity for meaningful interaction between corporate volunteers and the local tribal community.

 

At the beginning of the programme, Arulagam team addressed the gathering at Thengumarahada and introduced the organisation and about Arulagam’s long-standing work in vulture conservation, explaining the ecological importance of vultures and the serious threats they face. He also shared information about Arulagam’s efforts in sand dune conservation, livelihood support, and tribal education, helping the audience understand how conservation is closely linked to community well-being. This introduction created a strong foundation for the day’s activities and helped the community connect conservation issues with their own lives.

 

Following the awareness session, the Arulagam team distributed vulture-printed awareness T-shirts carrying a conservation message (T-shirt with the quote of பாறு செழித்தால் பாரும் செழிக்கும்- "For the World to Flourish, the Vulture must Prosper.") to the volleyball players, including winners, runners-up, and participants. The T-shirts served not only as a token of appreciation but also as a reminder of the importance of protecting vultures and maintaining ecological balance. This approach ensured that the conservation message continued to travel beyond the event.

 

To further deepen community engagement, a fingerprint painting activity was organised, encouraging participants to take part in conservation through art. The vulture outline was designed by Mr. Santhosh, Artist, and the activity was initiated by the State Street volunteers, who participated alongside community members. Using their fingerprints to fill the vulture’s body, both volunteers and local people symbolically expressed their responsibility in protecting wildlife. The activity created a joyful and inclusive atmosphere, with participants actively engaging and expressing pride in contributing to the artwork.

In addition to this, wall paintings were carried out at Kuzhithuraipatty at Forest Department building. The vulture outline was drawn, and the painting was completed jointly by Arulagam team members and State Street volunteers. These wall paintings now stand as permanent visual reminders of vulture conservation, reinforcing awareness among the community and visitors alike.

Overall, the event successfully brought together sports, conservation awareness, art, and community interaction into a single platform. The presence of young participants, active community involvement, and volunteer participation made the programme impactful and meaningful. The collaboration between Arulagam, State Street volunteers, and the local community strengthened relationships and reaffirmed the belief that conservation efforts are most effective when people come together with shared purpose and commitment.

 

Through such community-driven and creative initiatives, Arulagam continues to strengthen local stewardship for vulture conservation, ensuring that awareness translates into long-term protection for these irreplaceable guardians of ecosystem health.
