Coimbatore-based Arulagam (Nature Conservation Organization), with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), and under the supervision of the Central and State Governments, has been carrying out sand dune conservation initiatives on Rameswaram Island. As part of this ongoing effort, native dune-associated plants and trees are being planted to protect and restore the fragile ecosystem.

 

 

Continuing this initiative, a palm seed and tree planting event was organized today (October 28) at the Rameshwaram Municipality’s Nambunayaki Amman Water Supply Station, under the guidance of the Rameshwaram Municipality Commissioner and Municipality Engineer. The program was jointly conducted by Arulagam (Nature Conservation Organization) and Annai Scholastica Women’s College, Pamban.

The event began with a welcome address by Mr. Amirthalingam, Treasurer of Arulagam. Plantation expert Mr. Yashok Kumar Sivasubramaniyam explained the ecological importance of sand dune vegetation and the biodiversity they support. Project Officer Mr. Natarajan briefed the students on planting techniques, environmental protection, and led them in taking a Sand Dune Conservation Pledge to promote awareness and commitment toward dune ecosystem protection.

Under the supervision of Mr. Mohammed Shahidh, Project Coordinator of the Sand Dune Conservation Project, students from Annai Scholastica College were divided into two teams and, along with workers from Arulagam’s Neithal Nursery, carried out the planting activities. Around 2,000 palm seeds and 400 saplings were planted along the dunes surrounding the Nambunayaki Amman Water Supply Station.

More than 130 students and faculty members participated in the event, reaffirming their commitment to protecting Rameswaram’s unique sand dune ecosystem.

கோயமுத்தூர் சார்ந்த அருளகம் (இயற்கைப் பாதுகாப்பு அமைப்பு), ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் வளர்ச்சித் திட்டம் (UNDP) மற்றும் டெரி (TERI) நிறுவனங்களின் ஆதரவுடன், ஒன்றிய மற்றும் மாநில அரசின் மேற்பார்வையில் இராமேஸ்வரம் தீவில் மணல் மேடுகளைப் பாதுகாக்கும் பணிகளை மேற்கொண்டு வருகிறது. இதன் ஒரு பகுதியாக, மணல் மேடுகளுக்கே உரிய தாவரங்கள், செடிகள், கொடிகள் மற்றும் மரங்களை நட்டு அவற்றைப் பாதுகாக்கும் நடவடிக்கைகள் நடைபெற்று வருகின்றன.

இதன் தொடர்ச்சியாக, இராமேஸ்வரம் நகராட்சி, நம்புநாயகி அம்மன் நீரேற்று நிலையப் பகுதியில், நகராட்சி ஆணையாளர் மற்றும் பொறியாளர் அவர்களின் வழிகாட்டுதலின்படி, இன்று (அக். 28) அருளகம் (இயற்கைப் பாதுகாப்பு அமைப்பு) மற்றும் அன்னை ஸ்கொலாஸ்டிக்கா மகளிர் கலை மற்றும் அறிவியல் கல்லூரி இணைந்து பனை விதைகள் மற்றும் மரக்கன்றுகள் நடவு மேற்கொண்டது.

 

நிகழ்ச்சியில் அருளகத்தின் பொருளாளர் திரு. அமிர்தலிங்கம் அவர்கள் வரவேற்புரை ஆற்றினார். தொடர்ந்து தாவரவியல் நிபுணர் திரு. யசோக் குமார் சிவசுப்பிரமணியம் அவர்கள் மணல் மேடுகளில் காணப்படும் தாவரங்களின் முக்கியத்துவம் மற்றும் அவை சார்ந்த பல்லுயிர் சூழலின் அவசியத்தைப் பற்றி விளக்கமளித்தார். பின்னர் திட்ட அலுவலர் திரு. நடராஜன் அவர்கள் மாணவிகளுக்கு நடவு முறைகள் மற்றும் சுற்றுச்சூழல் பாதுகாப்பு குறித்து எடுத்துரைத்தார். பின்னர் மணல்மேடுகள் பாதுகாப்பு  உறுதி மொழியும் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டனர். 

 

 

 

அதனைத் தொடர்ந்து, மணல் மேடு பாதுகாப்பு திட்ட ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர் திரு. முஹம்மது ஷாஹித் அவர்களின் தலைமையில், அருளகத்தின் நெய்தல் நாற்றுப்பண்ணைப் பணியாளர்கள் மற்றும் மாணவிகள் இணைந்து இரண்டு அணிகளாகப் பிரிந்து பனை விதை மற்றும் மரக்கன்று நடவுப் பணிகளை மேற்கொண்டனர். இந்நிகழ்வில் சுமார் 2000 பனை விதைகள் மற்றும் 400 மரக்கன்றுகள் நம்புநாயகி அம்மன் நீரேற்று நிலையம் அருகிலுள்ள மணல் மேடுகளில் நட்டனர்.

 

இந்த நிகழ்வில் 130-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட மாணவிகள் மற்றும் பேராசிரியர்கள் கலந்து கொண்டு மணல்மேடுகள் பாதுகாப்பு பணிகளில் தங்களது பங்களிப்பை வழங்கினர்.

இன்று இராமேஸ்வரம் தீவில் இராமநாதசுவாமி கோயிலுக்கு சொந்தமான கப்பல் அடியான் முனீஸ்வரர் சாமி கோவிலில் இடத்தில் நமது அருளகத்தின் மணல் மேடுகள் பாதுகாப்பு திட்டத்தில் மரக்கன்றுகள் நடவு செய்யப்பட்டன. இந்த இடத்தைத் மரக்கன்றுகள் நடுவதற்குத் தோதாக இந்து சமய அறநிலையத்துறை அங்கு வளர்ந்திருந்த சீமைக் கருவேல் மரங்களை அகற்றியது. இந்நிகழ்வில் இராமநாதசுவாமி கோவில் இணை ஆணையாளர் திரு க செல்லத்துரை அவர்கள்மரக்கன்று நடவு செய்து பணியை துவக்கி வைத்தார். மேலும்  டாக்டர் திரு அய்யாசாமி டேனியல்  அவர்களும் அறநிலைத்துறை  உதவியாளர் திரு முருகானந்தம் அவர்களும் மரக்கன்றுகளை நடவு செய்து நிகழ்ச்சிக்கு சிறப்பு சேர்த்தனர்.

 

 

இந்த இடம் சுமார்  3000 மரக்கன்றுகள் மற்றும் 2000 பனை விதைகள் வரும் நாட்களில் முழுமையாக நடவு செய்யத் தீர்மானிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. மேலும் இதில் கடற்கரை ஓரப்பகுதியில் ஆயிரம் அலையாத்தி மரங்கள் நடவு செய்வதற்கான ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதில் அருளகத்தின் நாற்றுப்பண்ணை பணியாளர்கள் மரக்கன்று  நடவுப் பணியைச் சிறப்பாகச் செய்து முடித்தனர். மரக்கன்று நடவு செய்து முடித்தவுடன் சரியான நேரத்தில் நல்ல மழை பெய்து இயற்கை நமக்கு ஒத்துழைப்பை கொடுத்துள்ளது இன்னும் வரும் நாட்களில் மீதமுள்ள இடங்களில் முழுமையாக மரக்கன்று நடவு செய்ய திட்டமிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

 

Saplings were planted as part of our Arulagam Sand Dunes Protection Project at the Kappaladiyan Muniswarar Swami Temple, which belongs to the Ramanathaswamy Temple.

To make the location suitable for planting the saplings, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department removed the Prosopis Juliflora (Seemai Karuvelam) trees that had grown there.

The event was inaugurated by the Joint Commissioner of the Ramanathaswamy Temple, Thiru K. Sellathurai, who planted the first sapling.

Further, Dr. Ayyasamy Daniel and HRCE Department staff Thiru Muruganandam also planted saplings, adding significance to the event.

It has been resolved to fully plant around 3000 saplings and 2000 palm seeds in this location in the coming days. Furthermore, arrangements have been made to plant one thousand mangrove trees in the coastal area.

 

The nursery staff of Arulagam executed the sapling planting work efficiently. Right after the planting was completed, a good rain fell at the perfect time, showing nature's cooperation. It is planned to fully plant the remaining areas in the coming days.

 

To prevent school dropouts among tribal students, to mitigate human-animal conflict, and to consistently encourage them to attend school, the Tamil Nadu Government’s Department of Tribal Welfare has allocated 26 vehicles to various districts inhabited by tribal communities.

The service was inaugurated on October 6, 2025, by the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, at the Secretariat.

Of these, two vehicles will be used under the supervision of the Arulagam organisation in the Nilgiris district to transport students residing in and around Kargudi and Bokkapuram to their schools.

Arulagam extends its profound gratitude to the Honourable Chief Minister for facilitating this initiative; to the Honourable Minister for Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare, Mr. Mathiventhan; to the Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Government’s Department of Tribal Welfare, Mrs. G. Lakshmi Priya, IAS; and to the Director, Mr. C. Annadurai, and all others involved.

 

This marks a significant start in education, akin to a precision strike. Furthermore, this will allow students and animals to move harmoniously on their respective paths, leading to the creation of a nature-friendly generation. This brings us double joy. May this great work continue.

பழங்குடியினர் மாணவர்கள் இடைநிற்றலைத் தவிர்க்கவும் மனித விலங்கு எதிர்கொள்ளலைத் தவிர்க்கவும்  தொடர்ச்சியாக அவர்கள்  பள்ளி செல்வதை ஊக்குவிக்கவும்  தமிழ்நாடு அரசு பழங்குடியினர் நலத்துறை 26 வாகனங்களை பழங்குடியினர் வசிக்கும் பல்வேறு மாவட்டங்களுக்கும் வழங்கியது. அதனைத்தமிழ்நாடு முதல்வர் மாண்புமிகு மு .க ஸ்டாலின் அவர்கள் இன்று தலைமைச் செயலகத்தில் தொடங்கி வைத்தார்.

இதில் இரண்டு வாகனங்கள் அருளகம் அமைப்பு மேற்பார்வையில் நீலகிரி மாவட்டத்தில் கார்குடியிலும் பொக்காபுரத்திலும் அதனைச் சுற்றிலும் வசிக்கும் மாணவர்களைப் பள்ளியில் கொண்டு சேர்க்க  உபயோகப்படுத்தப்படும்.
இதற்கு வழிவகுத்த தமிழ்நாடு முதல்வர் அவர்கட்கும் ஆதிதிராவிடர் மற்றும் பழங்குடியின நலத்துறை அமைச்சர் மாண்புமிகு மதிவேந்தன் அவர்கட்கும்

 தமிழ்நாடு அரசுப் பழங்குடியினர் நலத்துறைச் செயலர் திருமதி ஜி. லட்சுமி பிரியா ஐ ஏ எஸ் அவர்கட்கும்  இயக்குனர் சி. அண்ணாதுரை  உள்ளிட்ட அனைவருக்கும் தனது திரளான நன்றியினை உரித்தாக்குகிறது. இது கல்வியில் ஒரு குறிப்பிடத்தக்க தொடக்கமாக அமையும். அத்துடன் மாணவர்களும் விலங்குகளும் இணக்கமாக அவரவர் வழியில் செல்லவும் இது வழி வகுக்கும்.இதன் மூலம்  இயற்கை நேயமிக்க தலைமுறை  உருவாகும் என்பதால் இரட்டிப்பு மகிழ்ச்சி.தொடரட்டும் அரும்பணி.

Jane Goodall, the renowned Primatologist and  guardian of biodiversity passed away on the 1st of October, 2025 peacefully in one of her speaking tours around the world. Jane was 91 but soldiered on to speak on behalf of wildlife.

In her early 20s, even as she was working after high school as she couldn't afford university, she accepted a friend's offer to travel. Serendipitously, her life took many turns and  she eventually moved to Tanzania to study the endangered Chimpanzee behaviour and ecology. Jane did not have the luxury of a college education however holds the honors of holding a PhD without any formal university experience.  Jane pioneered many important thesis and methodology on Chimpanzee ethology which proved seminal to primate evolutionary theories and research thereafter. She opened the door and prepared the ground for many female conservationists and ethologists. 

Jane inspired me to do what I do, to spread the word on importance of our wildlife, and to speak to young ones on the natural marvels of our world. Her words, “Only if we understand, can we care. Only if we care, we will help. Only if we help, we shall be saved" finds a sacred space in all my talks and conversations on conservation. 

She instituted the Roots and Shoots Organisation, an offshoot of the Jane Goodall Institute, through which she paved way to reach millions of young children and youth, across the world. She was appointed as the UN Ambassador of Peace in 2002 and has won a number of other awards through her life. 

She has visited Chennai twice. I even got an opportunity to see her in person in Hawaii while I was there to receive the Biodiversity Hotpost Hero Award in 2016. She was mobbed by young conservationists and students and I can only steal a peek at her. 

Arulagam pays their respect and homage to Jane and the legacy of conservation and love for wildlife and nature she has left behind. I believe the best way to continue to memoralise her and pay our respects and gratitude for her contributions to our lives is to continue her legacy. Goodbye, Jane. We will miss you!

 

உயிரினங்களின் காவலர், மனிதக் குரங்கு ஆராய்ச்சியாளர் முனைவர் ஜேன் குட்டால் நிறைவெய்தினார். (தோற்றம் 3 ஏப்ரல் 1934 மறைவு 1, அக்டோபர் 2025)
தன்சானியா நாட்டில் மனிதக் குரங்குகள் வாழ்வியல் நடத்தைகள் குறித்தான ஆய்வைத் தனது பள்ளிப் படிப்பை முடித்தவுடன் தொடங்கினார்.
 இளங்கலை முதுகலை படிப்பில்லாமல் நேரடியாக முனைவர் பட்டத்தை பெற்ற வெகு சிலரில் இவரும் ஒருவர்.

என் மனம் கவர்ந்தவர், மாணவர்களுடன் எனக்கு பேச வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கும்போதெல்லாம்  கீழ்காணும்  இவரது மேற்கோளை 
அதாவது, " உயிரினத்தைக் காப்பாற்ற வேண்டுமானால் முதலில் அதனைப் பற்றி அறிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும் அதன் மீது நேசம் கொள்ள வேண்டும் , அதன் மீது பற்று கொண்டு அதனைப் பாதுகாக்க முன்வர வேண்டும் "
எனது உரையில் அடிக்கடிப் பயன்படுத்துவதுண்டு.

Jane goodall institute நிறுவி Roots and Shoots அமைப்பு மூலம் இளம் தலைமுறையினர் உயிரினங்கள் குறித்து ஆய்வு மேற்கொள்ள வழி வகுத்தார்.
ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் அவையின் அமைதித் தூதுவராகவும் 2002 ஆம் ஆண்டு கௌரவிக்கப்பட்டார். இவருக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டதன் மூலம் பல்வேறு விருதுகளும் இவரால் பெருமை அடைந்தன.

சென்னைக்கும் ஓரிருமுறை வந்து உரையாடி இருக்கிறார்.

பல்லுயிர்ச் செழிப்பிட நாயகன் விருது பெறுவதற்காக 2016 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஹவாயில் நடைபெற்ற ஐயூசிஎன் மாநாட்டிற்குச் சென்றிருந்த  போது, இவரைச் சந்திக்க வாய்ப்பு கிட்டியது. இவரைச் சுற்றி இளைஞர்கள் கூட்டம் மொய்த்தபடி இருந்தது.கேமராக்காரர்கள் புடை சூழ இருந்தார்.

அவரது மறைவுக்கு அருளகம் தனது ஆழ்ந்த இரங்கலைத் தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறது.
அவர் விட்டுச் சென்ற பணிகள் தொடர வேண்டும் அதுவே நாம் அவருக்கு செலுத்தும் அஞ்சலி.

எமது குழுவினரோடு தெங்குமரகடா - வனச்சரகத்தில் பாறு கழுகுகள் குறித்தான களப்பணியில் இருந்தோம். யானை ஒன்று இறந்து கிடப்பதாகவும் அதனை உடற்கூராய்வு செய்ய இருப்பதாகவும் என்ஜி ஓ என்ற முறையில் நீங்கள் கலந்து கொள்ள இயலுமா என வனச்சரகர் கேட்டார்.  இறந்த காட்டுயிர்களை எப்படிக் கையாளவேண்டும் என்று வழிகாட்டு நெறிமுறை ஒன்றை அண்மையில் தமிழ்நாடு அரசின் காட்டுயிர் உயர் ஆராய்ச்சி நிறுவனம் வெளியிட்டிருந்தது. அந்நடைமுறை எப்படிக்கையாளப்படுகிறது என்பதைப் பார்க்கும் வாய்ப்புக் கிடைக்கும் என்பதால் உடனே ஒத்துக்கொண்டேன். 

காட்டுச்சாலை வழியே கடந்து சென்றோம். வனத்துறை முன்களப்பணியாளர்கள் வழிகாட்டுவதற்காக வழியில் காத்திருந்தனர். சென்று பார்த்தபோது, பெரும்பாறை ஒன்று சரிந்து கிடப்பதுபோல யானை கிடந்தது.  சுமார் 50 வயது மதிக்கத்தக்கதாக இருக்கலாம் என வனத்துறையினர் தெரிவித்தனர்.  13 ஆண்டுகட்கு முன்னர் இதே வனப்பகுதியில் யானை இறந்ததற்கு உடற்கூராய்வுக்கு வந்திருந்த நினைவு வந்தது.  உடற்கூராய்வு செய்வதற்கு முன்னரே பாறு கழுகுகளின் எச்சம் யானையின் உடலில் ஆங்காங்கே இருந்தது. ஏற்கனவே அவை இரையைக் கண்டுவிட்டது என்பதைத் தெரிவித்தது. ஆயினும் தோல் கடினமாக இருந்ததால் எளிமையான பகுதியான யானையின் கண்களை மட்டும் பாறு கழுகு கொத்தி எடுத்துச் சென்றிருந்தது. 

பொதுவாக செம்முகப்பாறுவின் அலகு கூர்மையாக வளைந்து இருப்பதால் அவை தான் முதலில் வந்து இறந்துகிடக்கும் விலங்கின் உடலைத் தனது கூரிய அலகால் கிழித்துத் தானும் உண்டுவிட்டு பிற விலங்குகளும் உண்பதற்குத்தோதாக வழிவகுக்கும். மற்ற பாறு கழுகுகளின் அலகானது கவ்விக் கிழித்து எடுத்துச்சென்று உண்பதற்குத் தோதாக இருக்கும்.

தற்போது செம்முகப்பாறுவின் எண்ணிக்கை வெகுவாகக் குறைந்துவிட்டதும் கவலைகொள்ளத் தக்கது. அண்மையில் பந்திப்பூர் சரணாலயத்தில் 5 பாறு கழுகுகள் இறந்தன. அதில் இரண்டு செம்முகப்பாறுவும் இருந்தன. ஏற்கனவே குறைவாக உள்ள நிலையில் இதுபோன்று அழிவும் பேரிடியாக விழுகிறது. 

யானையின் உடலைச் சுற்றி ஆயிரக்கணக்கான ஈக்கள் மொய்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தன. அப்படியே தனது சந்த தியைப் பெருக்கும் விதமாக முட்டையும் இட்டன.

முன்களப்பணியாளர்கள் உதவியுடன் முதுமலைச் சரணாலயத் துணை இயக்குநர் திரு. வித்யாதரன் மேற்பார்வையில் காட்டுயிர் மருத்துவர் ராஜேசு அவர்கள் உடற்கூராய்வு மேற்கொண்டார். யானையின் இரைப்பையில் கடந்த 5 நாட்களாக உணவெடுத்ததற்கான அறிகுறி ஏதும் இல்லை. வயதானதாலும் வேறு சில உடல் குறைபாட்டினாலும் இறந்திருக்கலாம் எனத்தெரிவித்தார். தந்தம் ஏதும் இல்லாத மோழையானையாக இருந்ததும் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. ஆந்திராக்சு போன்ற தொற்றுநோய் உருவாக்கும் நுண்ணுயிர்கள் இல்லாததால் உடற்கூராய்வுக்குப்பின்னர்,  யானையின் உடல் இறந்தவற்றை உண்ணும் பாறு கழுகுகள் உள்ளிட்ட உயிரினங்களுக்கு உணவாக விடப்பட்டது. அவை எளிதில் அணுகும் வண்ணம் அருகிலிருந்த முட்செடிகள் களையப்பட்டன. இறந்த யானையின் உடலானது குறைந்தது 350 பாறு கழுகுகளுக்கு உணவு வழங்கும். அத்துடன் பன்றிகளும், கழுதைப் புலிகளும் பல்லாயிரம் ஈக்களும், புழுக்குளும் பயனடையும். மகிழ்ச்சி. இது தொடரவேண்டும்.
