The South Asian regional meeting for the General Assembly members of the International Pollution Elimination Network (IPEN) was held from December 2nd to 4th in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. Just two days before the scheduled meeting, Sri Lanka was severely impacted by a devastating storm that caused widespread damage across the country.

Travel Challenges and Airline Negligence

The journey was fraught with difficulties. After reaching Chennai and completing immigration, we were kept waiting to board the flight to Sri Lanka. However, due to heavy downpours, the flight was cancelled as landing was deemed impossible. This significantly affected passengers traveling to Colombo for connecting flights. The airline staff appeared indifferent and provided negligent responses to the passengers' plight. Shortly thereafter, IndiGo airlines also faced a major crisis. Although there was significant doubt about whether the event would proceed, the organizers eventually called us, stating that the situation had stabilized.

Key Environmental Concerns Discussed

During the meeting, various environmental concern group from across South Asia highlighted critical ecological threats that often go unnoticed:

• Forever Chemicals (PFAS): Significant attention was drawn to Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), known as "forever chemicals," and their impact in Bangladesh. It was noted that this is not just a problem for Bangladesh but is also severe in India, particularly in regions involved in ready-made garment production.
• Pesticides: The impact of chemical pesticides on Sri Lanka’s environment was a major point of discussion, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations.
• Phthalates (Plastic Softeners): Concerns were raised regarding Phthalates, chemicals used to make plastics soft and durable. These substances act as endocrine disruptors, interfering with natural hormones. Participants highlighted that their presence in diapers is particularly alarming, as it is linked to changes in children's learning abilities.
• Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR): The global threat of increasing antimicrobial resistance in humans—caused by the overuse of medications and drugs administered to livestock—was discussed. A plea was made for governments to wake up and take immediate action against this looming health crisis.
• Lead Poisoning: The dangers of lead were also addressed. Arulagam (the organization) has previously conducted fieldwork on the risks posed by paints with high lead content. It was noted that lead is found not only in paints but also in some traditional medicines, which often escapes public scrutiny. I had the opportunity to share my perspectives on this issue, and Arulagam plans to focus more on lead-related advocacy in the future.

Conclusion

The three-day event provided new perspectives and clearly illustrated the upcoming environmental challenges and risks. It served as a vital platform for regional collaboration toward a toxic-free future. Our group work led to several key outcomes, including:

• Clear South Asia priorities and focus areas for the coming year
• Strengthened cross-country collaboration and commitment to joint action
• Renewed momentum for evidence generation, policy engagement, and community outreach
• A shared vision for a safer and toxics-free South Asia

The event was well organised by Toxics Link in association with Centre for Environmental Justice.

Arulagam inaugurated a Vulture Safe Veterinary First-Aid Kit and conducted a comprehensive vulture conservation awareness programme at Thengumarahada village in The Nilgiris. The initiative aims to protect endangered vulture species from the fatal effects of banned veterinary drugs.

The event, held on November 24, 2025, was presided over by Mr. V. Balakrishnan, Joint Director of the Nilgiris Regional Animal Husbandry Department, and was attended enthusiastically by 33 livestock owners from the village.

Focus on Safe Veterinary Practices - 

The programme’s core message centered on mitigating the primary threat to vultures: the use of illegal and lethal Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) such as Aceclofenac, Ketoprofen, and Nimesulide in livestock. 

• Ms. Sundari, Biologist at Arulagam, highlighted the critical ecological role of vultures as "nature’s clean-up crew," noting their importance in preventing disease spread. She strongly advocated for the use of government-approved safe alternatives, including Meloxicam and Tolfenamic acid, while also encouraging traditional Siddha medicines.
• Joint Director Mr. V. Balakrishnan underscored the ecological significance of Thengumarahada village and stressed that banned drugs remain a major threat requiring continuous public awareness and participation.

The participants demonstrated strong commitment by expressing their willingness to utilize the Vulture Safe First-Aid Kits provided by Arulagam for their livestock.

• Mr. Paraman, Arulagam’s Vulture Welfare Coordinator, detailed the organization’s ongoing conservation efforts. Deputy Director Mr. Parimalraj highlighted how the customary practices of the Parsi community historically support the vulture's natural feeding cycle. Mr. Jabez John, Arulagam’s Tribal Welfare Coordinator, shared a unique cultural perspective, explaining that while vultures were historically known as Pinam Thinni Kazhugu (carcass-eating vultures), Sangam literature respectfully refers to them as Paaru Kazhugu.

The event concluded with the distribution of vulture awareness pamphlets by Ms. Revathi (Sociologist), and the presentation of vulture artwork painted on coconut shells by artist Mr. Santhosh to the dignitaries, celebrating the successful inauguration of this vital conservation program. 

Recognising that vulture-lethal banned drugs (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory drugs ) are used for treating Mastitis, pain, and inflammation, we introduced a Vulture Safe First-Aid Kit in a remote village. The kit contains safer alternatives, such as Meloxicam, and traditional medicine prepared by YourFarm, thereby preventing contamination of the vulture food chain. Mr. S. Bharathidasan, Secretary of Arulagam, described the intervention: The event was organised as a precision attack.

நீலகிரி மாவட்டத்தின் கோத்தகிரி தாலுக்கில் உள்ள தெங்குமரஹடா கிராமத்தில், அருளகம் இயற்கைப் பாதுகாப்பு அமைப்பு சார்பாக பாறு நலன் காக்கும் கால்நடை மருத்துவ முதலுதவி பெட்டி திறப்பு விழா மற்றும் பாறுக் கழுகு பாதுகாப்பு விழிப்புணர்வு நிகழ்ச்சி நடைபெற்றது. நீலகிரி மண்டல கால்நடை இனை இயக்குநர் திரு வி. பாலகிருஷ்ணன் அவர்கள் தலைமையில் நடைபெற்ற இந்நிகழ்வில் கால்நடை வளர்ப்பவர்கள் ஆர்வமுடன் கலந்துகொண்டனர்.

அருளகம் அமைப்பின் கால்நடை நலன் ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர் திரு பரமன் அவர்கள், அருளகத்தின் பாறுக் கழுகு பாதுகாப்பு பணிகள் மற்றும் அதன் சமூக முக்கியத்துவத்தை விளக்கி அனைவரையும் வரவேற்றார். துணை இயக்குநர் திரு பரிமல்ராஜ் அவர்கள், பாறுக் கழுகுகள் பார்சி இன மக்களுடன் தொடர்புடைய பாரம்பரிய நடைமுறைகளையும், அவை எப்படி கழுகுகளின் உணவுச் சங்கிலிக்கு பயன்படுகின்றன என்பதையும் எடுத்துரைத்தார்.

பாறுக் கழுகு பாதுகாப்பு மற்றும் மருந்து விழிப்புணர்வு

அருளகம் உயிரியாளர் திருமதி சுந்தரி அவர்கள், பாறுக் கழுகுகள் இயற்கையின் துப்புரவுப் பணியாளர்கள் என்பதையும், இறந்த விலங்குகளை உண்பதன் மூலம் நோய் பரவலை தடுக்கின்றன என்பதையும் எடுத்துரைத்தார். கழுகுகளின் உணவுச்சங்கிலியில் தீங்கு விளைவிக்கக் கூடிய அசிக்ளோஃபினாக், கீட்டோபுரோபின், நிமெசுலைடு போன்ற மருந்துகளை முற்றிலும் தவிர்க்க வேண்டும் என்பதை வலியுறுத்தி, அதற்கு மாற்றாக அரசால் பரிந்துரைக்கப்பட மெலாக்ஸிகம் மற்றும் டோல்பினாமிக் ஆசிட் ஆகிய  மருந்துகளைப் பயன்படுத்துமாறும்  மற்றும் சித்த மருந்துகளைப் பயன்படுத்துமாறும் பரிந்துரைத்தார். மேலும், இயற்கையாக இறந்த கால்நடைகளை புதைக்காமல், காட்டுப் பகுதியில் வைக்கும்போது பாறுக் கழுகுகளுக்கான உணவு கிடைக்கும் எனவும் எடுத்துரைத்தார்.

அருளகத்தின் சமூகவியலாளர் திருமதி ரேவதி அவர்கள், தெருக்கூத்து, சுவர் ஓவியங்கள், கல்வி காணொளிகள், பள்ளி மாணவர்களுக்கு ஓவியம் போன்ற சமூக விழிப்புணர்வு நடவடிக்கைகளை அருளகம் முயற்சி செய்து வருகிறது என்று விளக்கினார்.

டாக்டர் புன்னியமூர்த்தி அவர்களின் பரிந்துரையின் கீழ், வீட்டு அடுக்களையில் பயன்படுத்தும் சமையல் பொருட்களையும் மூலிகைகளையும் பயன்படுத்திக் கால்நடை முதலுதவி செய்வது மற்றும் YourFarm என்ற பாதுகாப்பான கால்நடை மருந்துகளைப் பயன்படுத்துவது குறித்து  விளக்கங்கள் வழங்கப்பட்டன.

நீலகிரி மண்டல கால்நடைத்துறை இணை இயக்குநர் திரு வி. பாலகிருஷ்ணன் அவர்கள், தெங்குமரஹடா ஊர் ஒரு செழிப்பான இயற்கை கிராமம் என்பதையும், பாறுக் கழுகுகள் பாதுகாப்பில் தடை செய்யப்பட்ட மருந்துகள் மிக முக்கிய அச்சுறுத்தல் என்பதையும் விழிப்புணர்வு தொடர்ச்சியாக மக்கள் மூலம் நடைபெற வேண்டும் என்பதையும் இப்பணியைத் தொடர்ந்து அருளகம் மேற்கொண்டுவரவேண்டும் என்றும் தெரிவித்தார்.

தெங்குமரஹடா உயர்நிலை பள்ளி ஆசிரியர் திரு காசிராஜன் அவர்கள் பறவைகள் பற்றி எடுத்துரைத்து  பாறுக் கழுகுகளின் உணவுச் சங்கிலி முறையைக் கூறி அதன் சிறப்பு அம்சங்களை எடுத்துரைத்தார்.

அருளக்தின் பழங்குடிகள் நல ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர், திரு ஜான் அவர்கள் பேசும்போது, இவ்வகைக் கழுகுகளைப் பிணந்திண்ணிக் கழுகுகள் எனப் பொதுவாக அழைக்கபடுவதாகவு அப்படிக் கூறும் போது பிணம் என்ற பெயர் அவச்சொல்லாக‌ இருப்பதால், இப் பறவை இழிவாகப் பார்க்கப்படுவதாகச் சுட்டிக்காட்டினார். எனவே சங்க இலக்கியத்தில் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ள ‘'பாறு என்ற சொல்லைப் பயன்படுத்தி வருவதாகத் தெரிவித்தார். அருளகம் வழங்கிய கால்நடை முதலுதவி பெட்டியை கிராமத்தில் வைத்து பயன்படுத்த கிராம மக்கள்  தங்கள் ஆர்வத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தினர். இறுதியாக சுந்தரி, ரேவதி மற்றும் சந்தோஷ் ஆகியோர் பாறு கழுகு குறித்த விழிப்புணர்வுத் துண்டறிக்கைகளை மக்களுக்கு வழங்கினர்.

கால்நடைகளுக்குத் தடை செய்யப்பட்ட வலி மருந்துகள் தரப்படுவதைத் தடுக்கத் துல்லியத்தாக்குதலாக இம்முயற்சி எடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது எனத்தெரிவித்தார். இங்கு வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள முதலுதவிப் பெட்டியில் யுவர்பார்ம் தயாரித்த பாரம்பரிய மருந்துகளும் மெலாக்சிகம், டோல்பினாமிக் ஆசிட் போன்ற மருந்துகளும் உன்னிக்கடி மருந்துகளும் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளன எனத்தெரிவித்தார்.

With the support of school students we sowed 2000 Palm Seeds to protect Sand Dunes on Rameswaram Island

NSS students of the Rameswaram Thangachimadam Higher Secondary School in collaboration with Arulagam carried out a palm tree planting ceremony in the Arulmigu Muniyasamy Temple premises belonging to the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department. 

This project, which was carried out with the initiative of the Tamil Nadu Government, was led by the Secretary of the Arulagam, Su. Bharathidasan, the NSS officer of Thangachimadam Higher Secondary School, Mr. Sundar, Assistant Project Officer Mr. Senthilkumar, and the Project Coordinator of the Arulagam, Mr. Pon. Natarajan.

Today, 90 students joined hands to plant 2000 palm seeds. They also planted 300 trees native to the Neithal landscape.

The necessary arrangements for this event were made by Mr. Anbu and Mrs. Rani on behalf of the Arulagam. At the end of the event, everyone came together and took a pledge to protect the sand dunes.

இராமேசுவரம் தங்கச்சிமடம் மேல்நிலைப்பள்ளி நாட்டு நலப்பணித்திட்ட மாணவர்கள் அருளகம் அமைப்புடன் இணைந்து  இந்துசமய அறநிலையத்திற்கு சொந்தமான அருள்மிகு முனியசாமி கோவில் வளாகத்தில் பனை நடவை இன்று மேற்கொண்டனர். தமிழ்நாடு அரசின் முனைப்புடன் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட

இத்திட்டத்தினை அருளகம் செயலர் சு. பாரதிதாசன், தங்கச்சிமடம் மேல்நிலைப் பள்ளி நாட்டு நலப் பணித்திட்ட திட்ட அலுவலர்,  திரு.சுந்தர் உதவித் திட்ட அலுவலர் திரு.செந்தில்குமார்,  அருளகத்தின் திட்ட ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர் திரு. பொன். நடராசு ஆகியோர் வழி நடத்தினர். 

 

 
இன்று 90 மாணக்கர்கள் இணைந்து 2000 பனை விதைகளை நட்டனர். தொடர்ந்து  நெய்தல் சூழலுக்கேற்ற 300 மரச்செடிகளையும் நட்டனர்.  

இந்த நிகழ்வுக்கு தேவையான ஏற்பாடுகளை  அருளகம் சார்பில் திரு. அன்பு, திருமதி இராணி ஆகியோர் செய்திருந்தனர். நிகழ்வின் இறுதியில் அனைவரும் ஒன்றிணைந்து மணல்மேடுகள் பாதுகாப்பு உறுதி மொழி எடுத்துக்கொண்டனர்.

அன்பு நண்பர்களுக்கு,

இன்று அதிகாலையில் (4-11-2025) மேக்மோகன் அவர்களிடமிருந்து தொலைபேசி அழைப்பு வந்தது. பழனிமலைப் பாதுகாப்புக் குழுமத்தின் முன்னாள் செயலர் கண்ணன் சார் இயற்கை எய்தினார் என்ற தகவலை அவர் சொன்னபோது என்னால் நம்ப முடியவில்லை. காரணம், நேற்றுக் காலை 9.45 மணியிலிருந்து 11.45 மணிவரை பட்டிவீரன்பட்டியில் உள்ள அவரது இல்லத்தில் அவரைச் சந்தித்துச் சுமார் இரண்டு மணி நேரம் உரையாடினோம். 

அவரைப் பார்க்கச் சென்றபோது, ஐசக்கெகிம்கர் எழுதிய இந்தியப் பட்டாம்பூச்சிகள்  ‘The Book of Indian Butterflies’- by Isaac Kehimkar’s )என்ற நூல்  அவரது மேசையில் இருந்தது. நலம் விசாரித்த பின்னர் எங்களது உரையாடல் சுற்றுச்சூழல் நோக்கித் திரும்பியது…கடல்மட்டம் உயர்ந்து வருவது, தூண்டில் வளைவின் தாக்கம், பட்டாம் பூச்சிகள், தேனீ வளர்ப்பு, தாய்லாந்துப் பயணம், இலங்கைப் பயணம், பேரப் பிள்ளைகள், மழைப் பொழிவில் ஏற்படும் மாற்றங்கள், ஆள் பற்றாக்குறை காரணமாக தனது அப்பா அடித்த களைக்கொல்லி மருந்துகளின் தாக்கம், இளந்தலைமுறைகள் வெளிநாட்டுப் படிப்பை நாடிச் செல்வது என உரையாடல் நீண்டது. இலங்கைக்கு திருவாளர் ஸ்ரீஸ் கந்தராசா அழைப்பின்பேரில் சென்று வந்த பயணம், கிளிநொச்சி, முல்லைத்தீவு சென்று வந்தது, சுவீடனிலிருந்து இயங்கும் தேனீக் கூட்டமைப்பில் உறுப்பினராக இருப்பது  என உரையாடல் தொடர்ந்தபடி இருந்தது.  

தான் சிறு வயதாக இருந்தபோது சென்னையில் உள்ள அத்தை வீட்டிற்குச் செல்வோம். அப்போது மெரீனா கடல் சுமார் அரை கிலோ மீட்டர் தொலைவில் இருந்ததாகவும் தற்போது சிறிது நடந்த உடனேயே வந்துவிடுவதாகவும் அவர் சொன்னபோது நானும் அதை யோசித்துப்பார்த்து ஆமோதித்தேன். 

உணவு குறித்துப் பேச்சு வந்தபோது, என்  ஒருவனுக்காக தினம் சமைக்க வேண்டாம் எனக்கூறி விட்டதாகவும் அதனால் இரண்டு நாளைக்கு ஒரு முறை மட்டும் சமையல்காரப்பெண்மணி வந்து சமைத்துவைத்துவிட்டுச் சென்று விடுவார் என்றும் சோறு மட்டும் அவ்வப்போது சூடாக வைத்துக்கொள்வேன் என்றும் 67 வயது முடியப்போகிறது. கொஞ்சம் தான் சாப்பிட முடிகிறது என இயல்பாகப் பேசினார். 

இலங்கைப் பயணம் குறித்துப் பேசியபோது, நம் ஊரில் வளரும் பொரசு மரத்தை விட இலங்கையில் வளரும் பொரசு மரம் சுற்றளவில் மூன்று மடங்குப் பெரிதாக இருப்பதாகவும் தெரிவித்தார். இம்மாத இறுதியில் International Pollution Elimination Network அமைப்பின் அழைப்பின் பேரில் இலங்கை செல்லும் வாய்ப்பு எனக்கு உள்ளதாகவும் அப்போது நீங்களும்  வரலாமா என அவரிடம் கேட்டேன். ஓரிரு நாளில் திருவாளர் ஸ்ரீ யுடன் பேசிவிட்டுச் சொல்கிறேன் என்றார். எனது தாயாரும் உடன் இருந்ததால் அவருக்கு அலுப்பாகிவிடும் என்று உரையாடலை இடை நிறுத்திவிட்டு நானும் இராமேசுவரத்தில் நடைபெறும் மரக்கன்றுகள் நடும் பணியில் கலந்துகொள்வதற்காகப் போகவேண்டும் என்று கூறி விடைபெற்றேன். 

கிளம்பும் போது தனது எஸ்டேட்டில் விளைந்த மருந்து அடிக்காத பழங்கள் எனக் கூறி மூன்று ஆரஞ்சுப்பழங்களை எனது பையில் திணித்தார். பேருந்துப் பயணத்தில் சன்னல் ஓர இருக்கையில் அமர்ந்திருந்ததால் நண்பகல் வெயில் சுளீர் எனத்தாக்கியது. நாவறண்டது. பையிலிருந்து அவர் தந்த ஆரஞ்சுப் பழங்களைச் சுவைத்தபோது கொஞ்சம் பல் கூசியது. புதுத் தெம்பாகவும் இருந்தது. உடனே கையைத் துடைத்துவிட்டு எனது அலைபேசியை எடுத்துப் பழங்கள் அருமை உங்களுடன் உரையாடியதும் நன்றாக இருந்தது எனக் குறுஞ்செய்தி அனுப்பினேன். இது தான் நான் அவருக்கு அனுப்பும் கடைசிச் செய்தியாக இருக்கும் எனத் துளியும் நினைக்கவில்லை.

திரு. கண்ணன் (வயுது 67) அவர்கள் படித்ததோ மருந்தியல். ஆனால் தாவரங்கள் குறித்த தேர்ந்த புலமை மிக்கவராக இருந்தார். பட்டாம் பூச்சிகள் தேன் எடுக்க நாடும் தாவரங்கள், பட்டாம்பூச்சிகள் உணவாக்கும் தாவரங்கள் என பல்வேறு விசயங்களும் அவருக்கு அத்துப்படி. பொருளாதார நோக்கிலும் மரக்கன்றுகள் வளர்ப்பது குறித்து ஆழ்ந்த புலமையுடையவராக இருந்தார்.

இடிந்தகரையில் மரம் நடும் பணியிலிருந்தபோது அதை மேற்பார்வையிட ஆய்வாளராக வந்து தவறுகளைச் சுட்டிக்காட்டுவார். அவரிடமிருந்து நிறையப் படிப்பினைகளை நான் பெற்றேன். 

என்னிடம் அவர் நினைவு கூர்ந்த ஒரு சம்பவத்தைப் பகிர விரும்புகிறேன். 2007 ஆம் ஆண்டு கடற்கரையோரத்தில் மரக்கன்றுகள் நடுவதற்காகப் பல்வேறு நிறுவனங்கள் திட்ட அறிக்கை சமர்ப்பித்திருந்தன.  அருளகமும் சமர்ப்பித்திருந்தது. நிறுவனங்களைத் தேர்ந்தெடுப்பதற்காக நடந்த கூட்டத்தில் சிறப்பு அழைப்பாளராக அவர் இருந்தார். அந்தக் கூட்டத்தில் கோயமுத்தூரில் இருக்கும் அருளகம் எப்படித் திருநெல்வேலியிலுள்ள இடிந்தகரையில் மரம் நட முடியும் எனத் தான் கேட்டதாகவும் உங்களது களச் செயல்பாட்டைப் பார்த்தபின்னர் எனது நிலைப்பாட்டை மாற்றிக்கொண்டேன் என்று என்னிடம் ஒரு முறை தெரிவித்தார். 

அவரது மகளது படிப்பிற்காக இரண்டரை ஆண்டுகள் கோயமுத்தூரிலுள்ள  சாய்பாபா காலணி அருகில் தங்கியிருந்தார். இவர் காபி குடிப்பதல் நாட்டம் மிக்கவர். அவருக்குப் பிடித்தமான டபுள் ஸ்ட்ராங் காபியைப் பருகிக்கொண்டே அவருடன் பலமுறை உரையாடியிருக்கிறேன். Mountain starts from Ocean’ என்ற சொல்லை அவர் அடிக்கடி சொல்வார். இதே தலைப்பில் அருளகம் சார்பாக நிர்மலா மகளிர் கல்லூரி மாணவிகளுக்கு நடத்திய நாட்டுநலப் பணித்திட்டத்தில்  உரையாற்றியும் இருக்கிறார். நினைவுகள் மட்டுமே இப்போது மிச்சமுள்ளது. 

அவரது இறப்பிற்கு அருளகம் தனது இரங்கலைத் தெரிவித்துக்கொள்கிறது. அவரது பிரிவால் வாடும் அவரது குடும்பத்தார் இந்த அதிர்ச்சியிலிருந்து மீண்டு வரவேண்டும். அவர் இயற்கையின் மடியில் இளைப்பாரட்டும்.

இன்று அவரது நினைவாக இராமேசுவரம் தீவில் 200 மரக்கன்றுகளையும் பனங்கொட்டைகளையும் நட்டு அருளகம் சார்பாக அவருக்கு அஞ்சலி செலுத்தினோம்.

Dear friends,

I received a phone call from Mr. MacMohan early this morning (4-11-2025). I could not believe it when he told me that Kannan sir, the former secretary of the Palani Hills Conservation Council (PHCC), had passed away. The reason was that I met him at his residence in Pattiveeranpatti the day before morning from 9.45 am to 11.45 am and talked for about two hours.

When I went to see him, a book called ‘The Book of Indian Butterflies’- by Isaac Kehimkar was on his table. After asking each other about our well-being, our conversation turned to the environment…the rising sea level, the impact of the groynes, butterflies, beekeeping, trips to Thailand and Sri Lanka, grandchildren, changes in rainfall, the impact of his father’s use of herbicides due to lack of manpower, and the younger generations seeking foreign education. The conversation continued with the trip to Sri Lanka at the invitation of Thiruvalar Sris Kantharaja, visits to Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu, and being a member of the Bee federation operating from Sweden.

He shared that when he was young, he would go to his aunt’s house in Chennai. And his aunt said that the Marina sea was about half a kilometer away then and that now it was just a short walk away.  I thought about it and agreed.

When we talked about food, he said that he had decided not to cook for just himself every single day, so the cook would come once in two days to make meals, and that he would only boil rice from time to time, and that he is 67, saying that he could only eat a small portions these days.

When we talked about his trip to Sri Lanka, he said that the Sri Lankan Porasu tree is three times larger in circumference than the Porasu tree growing in our village. I shared that I have the opportunity to go to Sri Lanka at the end of this month on the invitation of the International Pollution Elimination Network, and I asked him if he could also join me. He said that he would talk to Thiruvalar Sri in a day or two and let me know. I thought that he would get bored since my mother was also with me during our conservation, so I stopped and said that I have to go to participate in the sapling planting work being done in Rameswaram, and said goodbye.

While leaving, he stuffed three oranges into my bag, saying that they were pesticide-free fruits grown on his farm. As I was sitting on the window seat on the bus, the midday sun was scorching. And I was parched. When I tasted the oranges he brought from his bag, my teeth ached a little. It was refreshing. I immediately wiped my hands and took out my phone and sent him a text message saying, “The fruits are delicious and it was nice to chat with you.” I never thought that this would be the last message I would send him.

Mr. Kannan (67) studied pharmacology. But he was an expert in plants. He was knowledgeable about various things like plants that butterflies seek for nectar, plants that butterflies feed on. He was also deeply knowledgeable about growing saplings from an economic perspective.

When I was planting trees at Idinthakarai, he would come as an inspector to supervise it and point out mistakes. I learned a lot from him.

I would like to share an incident that he recalled to me. In 2007, various organisations had submitted project reports for planting saplings along the coast. Arulagam had also submitted one. He was the special invitee at the meeting held to select the organisations. At that meeting, he had raised the question that how Arulagam, which is an organisation based in Coimbatore, could plant trees at Idinthakarai in Tirunelveli and later told me that he changed his views after seeing Arulagam’s field work.

He had stayed near Saibaba Colony in Coimbatore for two and a half years for his daughter’s studies. He was a coffee drinker. I have talked to him many times while sipping his favourite double strong coffee. He often used to say the phrase ‘Mountain starts from Ocean’. He had also addressed a national service program organised by Arulagam for the students of Nirmala Women’s College on the same topic. Only memories remain now.

Arulagam expresses its condolences on his death. May his family, who are suffering from his separation, recover from this shock. May he rest in the lap of nature.

Today, in his memory, we paid tribute to him on behalf of Arulagam by planting 200 saplings and native trees on Rameswaram Island.

Yes, ‘Mountain starts from Ocean’.

அருள் அவர்களின் 24 வது நினைவு நாள் நிகழ்வு அக்டோர் 31 அன்று கோயமுத்தூரில் உள்ள அருளகம் அலுவலகத்திலும் கள அலுவலகமான இராமேசுவரத்திலும் கடைபிடிக்கப்பட்டது. 

இந்நிகழ்விற்கு கார்த்திகா இராஜ்குமார் தலைமை தாங்கி அருள் அவர்களுடன் தனக்கிருந்த நட்பையும் அவரது கலகக் குணத்தினையும் நினைவு கூர்ந்தார். 

 

தமிழ்நாடு அரசு இந்த ஆண்டை நாவல் மர ஆண்டாக அறிவித்ததை முன்னிட்டு அருளகம் பூந்தளிர்  நாற்றுப்பண்ணையில் நாவல் விதைகள் நடப்பட்டன. 

அருள் நினைவு நாளை முன்னிட்டு நாற்றுப்பண்ணையில் பணிபுரியும் பணியாளர்களுக்கு ஊக்கத்தொகையும் ஊதிய உயர்வும் வழங்கப்பட்டது.

 

இராமேசுவரத்தில் அருள் அவர்களின் 24 வது நினைவு நாளை முன்னிட்டு 24 மரக்கன்றுகள் நடப்பட்டன. இந்நிகழ்விற்குத் தன்னார்வலர் அன்பு அவர்கள் முன்னிலை வகித்தார். அருளகம் பணியாளர்கள் அனைவரும் ஒரு நிமிடம் மௌன அஞ்சலி செலுத்தி மரக்கன்றுகளை நட்டனர்.

இந் நிகழ்வில்  அருள் அவர்களது புதல்வன் அவிநாசு முதல் முறையாகக் கலந்து கொண்டது கூடுதல் சிறப்பு. அவருக்குத் தோழர் இராம்மோகன் பொன்னாடை அணிவித்து வரவேற்றார். ‘பாறு கழுகுகளைத் தேடி’ என்ற நூலை அருளகத்தின் செயலர் சு. பாரதிதாசன் வழங்கினார். 

 

அருள் அவரது  விருப்பத்திற்கு ஏற்ப குரலற்றவர்களின் குரலாக அருளகம் தொடர்ந்து இயங்கும் என உறுதி எடுத்துக்கொள்வோம்.
