
Tree Plantation Drive at District Munsif-cum-Judicial Magistrate Court, Rameswaram
A Tree Plantation Drive was organised on 18th April 2025 at the District Munsif-cum-Judicial Magistrate Court premises in Rameswaram. The event was a collaborative initiative led by the Rameswaram Bar Council, with the active participation of officials from the judiciary, police, revenue, and forest departments, along with civil society organisations and local community members. The objective of the event was to promote environmental consciousness and enhance the green cover within the court premises through the plantation of native tree species.
The event was formally inaugurated by Hon’ble Judge Shri G. Prabhakaran, who served as the Chief Guest. In his address, he emphasised the significance of institutional responsibility in environmental conservation and commended the collective efforts of all participating departments and organisations.
He especially extended his gratitude to Arulagam, the nature conservation organisation, for providing native tree saplings and offering technical support that ensured ecologically appropriate plantation practices.
Members of the Rameswaram Bar Council played a leading role in organising the drive. Participants from the council included Mr. Mayilsamy (President), Mr. Hariharan (Secretary), Mr. Vimalraj (Joint Secretary), Mr. Maari Muthu (Treasurer), Senior Advocates Anis Soniya, Mr. Nambu Maarimuthu, Mr. Varun Kumar, Para Legal Volunteers Mr. Murugesan and Mr. Mahesh.
From the police department, Mr. Sathayantha Moorthy (Deputy Superintendent of Police), Ms. Maheshwari (Inspector), Mr. Manimaaran (Sub-Inspectors) and Mr. Kumar participated and graced the occasion. Mr. Abdul Jabbar (Zonal Deputy Tahsildar) represented the revenue department. Forester and guard from the Tamil Nadu State Forest Department contributed their support to the initiative.
Staff members from Arulagam played an instrumental role by supplying native saplings and guiding the technical aspects of planting. Their contribution was recognised and appreciated by the chief guest and organising committee. Additionally, local community members actively participated in the plantation, reflecting their commitment to environmental stewardship and collective action.
Staff members of the Judiciary Department, Rameswaram were vital in coordinating and managing the logistics of the event. Their support ensured the smooth execution of all planned activities.
At the end of the programme, Mr. Mohammed Shahidh (researcher) from Arulagam presented a sand dune awareness poster to Hon’ble Judge Shri G. Prabhakaran and explained the importance of conserving sand dunes and their critical role in coastal ecology and climate resilience. Following this, awareness posters were distributed to all the participants, emphasising the need for greater understanding and protection of natural dune systems in the region.
The plantation drive stands as a model of successful interdepartmental cooperation, public participation, and ecological responsibility. It reaffirmed the collective commitment to restoring green spaces and fostering sustainable practices within public institutions and the broader community.
