Volleyball Tournament for Vulture Brigade members

Target group: Tribal Youth of Nilgiri District
Purpose: To spread awareness about endangered vultures and threat to vulture populations because of Diclofenac drug.

A District Level Volleyball Tournament was organised by Ayyan Thiruvalluvar Youth Welfare Society, Anaikatty on November 17 & 18, 2012 at Anaikatty Village, a remote tribal hamlet in Nilgiris.

This annual event was used as a means to spread messages among the tribal youth about the Vultures and the cause for its disappearance. We along with tribal hamlet heads and Vulture brigade volunteers took active step in mobilisation of 32 tribal teams to attend the event by providing transport, food and snacks for the participants. A total of 32 teams where as 192 players were actively participated in this tournament. Six hundred of tribal youth and public from the nearby villages witnessed the game.

ANAIKATTI – ‘A’ Team won the first prize. First, Second, Third prizes to the teams, Best player and several consolation prizes were distributed by the distinguished guests. ‘Arulagam’-NGO Secretary Mr. S.Bharathidasan and members Kovai Sadhasivam, Mr.S.Asokan and Mr. Kumar participated in the two-day tournament and gave away prizes to the winners.

The play ground was well organised with ‘Vulture Conservation’ banners and cut-outs. People in the tribal hamlet extended their full cooperation.

“SAVE VUTURES AND AVOID USING OF BANNED DICLOROFENACE” slogan was aired during the matches at 15 minutes interval of time.

On behalf of Ayyan Thiruvalluvar Youth Society and Arulagam would like to thank following dignitaries for made this event success.

The food and refreshments to the participants were sponsored by Students of ‘Kowmaram Sushila International Residential School’, Coimbatore through the motivation of Mr.Devaprakash, Honorary Secretary, Arulagam and Ms.Lalitha Devaprakash, Correspondent. The travelling expenses of participants, honorarium to the adjudicator were borne by ARULAGAM. Hand bills, banner and batches were funded by Mrs. Ramadevi former Director Zoological Society of India and Managing Trustee Care Earth Trust-Chennai. Audio visual arrangements and Pandhal were made with financial support from Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF).

Cash award for the First prize was sponsored by K.John, Mavinalla Youth Welfare Society, Trophy was sponsored by Mr.Basavan Village Head, Anaikatti, IInd Prize trophy was sponsored by Mr.Bommarayan Junior works Manager, Cordite factory, Cash award for the IInd prize was sponsored by Mr. Ravi, Eco Camp, Semmanatham, IIIrd Prize was sponsored by Mr. B.A. Eswaran Manager , GNI, Mavinallah Cash award was sponsored by Anish Indian Driver Association, IDA. Masinagudi, Mr. Rajendran, Head Master, Anaikatti School and Mr. Mohamad safi, Gudalur voluntarily donated and made this event successful.
