Plantation Drive: Sand Dune Conservation at Rameshwaram Island
Introduction
Arulagam, a nature conservation NGO based in Coimbatore, is actively involved in sand dune conservation at Rameshwaram Island with the support of UNDP/SGP/GEF/TERI. The project aims to protect 50 hectares of sand dune habitats by planting native tree, herb, and creeper species suited to these ecosystems. As part of this initiative, Arulagam has established a dedicated nursery named Neythal at Mugammathiyaar Puram, Kunthukkal. This nursery has successfully developed over 45,000 saplings specifically for sand dune habitats, with the active participation of local community members.
Event Details
On 07.12.2024, Arulagam organized a plantation event near Nambu Kovil, Rameshwaram, during which 738 saplings were planted with the support of local community members.

- Mr. Saravanan, Aranya, Auroville, Pondicherry
Mr. D. Saravanan, Aranya, from Auroville, graced the occasion with his presence. His insightful advice will undoubtedly steer the project in the right direction. To mark the beginning of the plantation drive, he planted a pandanus sapling, a significant gesture symbolizing growth and renewal.
- Ramanathapuram District Forest Officer Visit:
The Ramanathapuram District Forest Officer, Mrs. Hemalatha, visited the plantation site during the event. She shared her insights on the importance of sand dune conservation and encouraged the team. Mrs. Hemalatha also planted a few saplings, demonstrating her support for the initiative. - UNDP and TERI Team Visit:
Later in the evening, officials from UNDP and TERI inspected the plantation site. They appreciated the efforts made by the team. To show their solidarity, the officials planted saplings and commended the initiative’s focus on sustainable conservation. - Mr. Jagatheeshwaran, the Green Fellow of Ramanathapuram district, also visited the plantation site along with the UNDP and TERI team.
Leadership and Coordination
The plantation event was overseen by Arulagam’s Secretary, Mr. S. Bharathidasan, who ensured the program’s successful execution. His leadership played a vital role in mobilizing resources and involving local stakeholders. Mr.A. Amirthalingam, Treasurer of Arulagam coordinated the plantation work. The event was organized and streamlined by the Arulagam team, Mr. P. Natarajan and Mr. Mohammad Shahith.
Bharathidasan, Secretary of Arulagam, noted that the village might have been named after the abundant pandanus plants that once thrived here. Unfortunately, many of these trees have been destroyed. He emphasized the importance of reviving the original name by planting more pandanus trees. By doing so, we can potentially mitigate the impact of saltwater intrusion and tsunami waves in the future.
